Water
Water is a topographic element of time, it is spatial and territorial.
Return and Reshape
The cycle of water in our planet, from rainfall to flows, from being reserved to evaperated, is an endless process. But human activities changed the nature of the cycle.
The treatment of wastewater is a series of steps that restore the water and release the energies. It seems to be a slow and quiet process, but after visiting each site, I can feel the strong impacts brought out by the speedy movements of things, especially when hearing the roars made by machines under high pressure.
I’ve seen nightingales perch by the sediment pond to catch fish, and heard, through hydrophone, the shrieks of metal fraction at the bottom of the pond, while the water surface maintained completely quiet, and fish swam freely in it. The noise and stench during the “restoration” of water suggests life and death, and a food chain lives relying on.
Through my collection of various sounds during the water supply and treatment in the TSP, my work explores the soundscape of technology—its traces over time.
水
是時空、地域的拓樸元素。
返本、還源與重塑
地球上的水文循環：降水、逕流、儲存及蒸發，無時無刻不以自然的方式進行著。而人類的各種活動改變了自然水體的水質狀況。
污水處理過程涉及一系列的還原步驟及能量釋放。其中的速度感，在理論與程序上理解起來是緩而靜的。但身歷於各階段現場環境時，其形氣的交織卻能深刻感受到加速的劇烈波動。機械使力逆轉的怒吼更反映著承受極度高壓的狀態。不過，目睹水鳥飛進污水廠停在沈澱池邊準備捕食池內魚群；透過水聽器聽見池底金屬摩擦刺耳聲響，水面卻一片平靜無波、魚群依然悠遊時，其展現的是一真實的環境生態。這座充斥噪音、污臭及各式流水聲的處理廠在「水還原」的路徑上有生命、有死亡，也有食物鏈。
作品透過不同的收音麥克風收錄「水」元素在南科供水設施和污水廠各處的振動及聲景，尋其歷程也微觀聲相，以呼應科技發展的源頭及初心，感知聲音其中的時空延續和連結。
TSP Project
Founded more than twenty years ago, Tainan Science Park provides businesses with comprehensive service; meanwhile, over this time it has developed its unique traits in the environs and built connections with local communities. The site expands across three districts, namely Xinshi, Anding and Shanhua. During the early construction, many archaeological pits had been discovered, later they were studied and defined as six cultural layers and eleven prehistoric phases, covering a period as long as 4,500 years. The excavated treasure greatly augmented the histography of the site.
TSP project investigates the water supply and treatment in the Park, a resource easily to be overlooked or unheard. The management of water, including its design and usage, tells us the crucial role of water(including “virtual water” accompanied with international trade of other commodities) in hi-tech industries and how it can be applied sustainably. The artists’ actions are to translate the Wastewater Treatment Plant’s supporting role in hi-tech industries, and the responsibility it carries up for the sustainability of resources.
Water as the essence of being, is the most basic element of life. In the world history and cultures all over the world, water is the symbol of enlightenment, wisdom, wealth, the origin of all, the core of civilization, rebirth and redemption, the beginning and end of life, as well as motherhood.
南科計畫
南部科學工業園區成立迄今二十多年，園區整體發展完善，也漸進拓展出園區自身的人文氛圍，與周圍環境與在地社區共生共存的方式。園區腹地橫跨台南新市、安定、善化三處行政區，開發初期，於腹地上發現多處考古遺址，相繼出土包含六個文化層、十一個分期的史前文物，涵蓋範圍長達4500年之久，豐富的文物與文化層為如今的南科園區，在面對未來創新上增添一筆特殊的人文脈絡。
「南科計畫」以園區污水處理為出發點，探索「水」在科技產業的生產過程中，不易被“看見”或“聽到”的環境影響，鎖定園區的「水工程」及「水處理」作為切入，探究水如何在科技園區的設計、利用及處理上，扮演至關重要的角色，以理解水資源（虛擬水）在科技產業生產過程內的歷程，並關照能源使用的永續理想。藝術家透過創作回應污水處理廠，其作為生活中的良知建設，支援著科技製造，也善盡分擔能源永續的責任。
「水」，作為生命的必需物質、也是生物體最重要的組成部分，之於古今東西方的歷史與文化中，亦有多樣的啟蒙與象徵的意涵。是萬物起源、是智慧、是文明、是財富、是生命與死亡、是滌罪再生，亦是母性。
